How the Lakers win Vucevic without giving up any draft pick

2:45am, 2 August 2025Basketball

According to Chaitanya Dadwar, contributor of US sports media F/W. The Lakers have been looking to add bigger players to the team since they got Doncic. They previously acquired Ayton to take the starting role in the center position, but now there may be another exciting player next season: Vucevic.

The Swiss-born center recently agreed with the Bulls that if the deal is not completed by the February deadline, they will buy him out this season. This opens up space for potential suitors to buy him at a discount if they want to trade him faster or wait until November or December to sign his waiver.

According to Lakers' Ryan, if the Lakers consider signing the money this offseason, they will need to make some adjustments to the roster. They are currently unable to accept his salary directly, although they have a free list position as they have a hard cap on the No. 1 tycoon line. Ryan talked about the possibility of the Lakers investigating the 34-year-old Black Mountain center in the recent Lakers National Podcast. He believes that the Lakers will only attack him if he is bought out and will not seek to trade a second round pick for him. "Suppose they really don't want to give up that second in order to give up some salary. One option might be to give up and extend Vincent or Kleber's salary; you can do that with anybody. So the question becomes, is this the preferred path, rather than giving up a second round pick, and have $3.6 million in dead money on your books?"

Lian believes that the Lakers need to evaluate whether Kleber or Vincent has made a serious contribution to the team's ambitions before deciding which player they should give up if they are considering competing with Vucevic. Currently their cap space is only $1.1 million, and the Lakers will have to give up Vincent or Claybel to make room for any offer from Vucevic, let alone assume he accepts it.

Vucevic, despite his career being close to a downhill, can be a solid contributor to a team that is competing for the championship. The former All-Star averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season and shot 40.2% from three-pointers. On any night, the stretch big man is a potential double-double threat, and it can even provide some versatility if the Lakers want to change their offensive strategy and use two big players in their starting lineup.

Considering how successful Uduka's Rockets had in the double heights of Adams and Shinkin last season, they could also choose to use the strategy if Vucevic joined the Lakers. But these assumptions are based on the assumption that if Vucevic is bought out, the Lakers will be interested in signing him. Considering that the two big men on the roster are threats to the inside, players like Vucevic can help the Lakers open up space in their offensive strategy and add some space. In my opinion, he will be a valuable addition to the Lakers, especially if things don't go well with Kleber, as he is also the perfect replacement for the team's depth map.
