Warriors and 76ers swap future stars Kuminga and Grimes in ideal deal

5:56pm, 21 July 2025Basketball

According to US sports media F/W reporter Eddie Bitar. As the Warriors build on the pending Kumingga contract and no major free agent changes, the pressure on management may grow. The 22-year-old striker, who seeks at least a short-term contract of more than $30 million, has made it clear: his time in the Bay is nearing its end. Meanwhile, the 76ers are facing their own financial stalemate. Philadelphia is still operating near the luxury tax, unable or unwilling to fully commit to the restricted free agent Grimes, which has left him in trouble and eroded their cap flexibility. And if the Warriors give up Kuminga, fixing the roster chemistry and freeing up future financial wiggle room, the Sixers can adjust their direction by soaring nearly 22 points at the end of the season.

76ers get: Kuminga (signed and traded)

Golden State Warriors get a perfect player in the system

The Warriors' management knows clearly that they need a player suitable for sports offense, not just the original potential. And Grimes, a 6-foot-4 wing, has fixed-point shots, cleverness and playoff experience. Grimes averaged 14.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3 assists last season, and after Cuminga's development stabilized, he filled the Golden State Warriors' much-needed 3D fill position. But he will make sure the spacing around Curry, Butler and Green without a reckless game.

Grimes also provides the attitudes that this culture requires. He’s the kind of glue guy who loves system basketball, has records from Houston to New York, and then stands out in Philadelphia, averaging nearly 22 points and a solid defense in key games. The Warriors need that kind of veteran plasticity, someone who knows where to be on the court, how to rotate and when to close the court. Pairing him with Curry provides Cole with a tried and tested role player. Grimes brings stability, filling gaps in locker room leadership and perfecting the rotation that seeks balance.

76ers found the perfect long-term partner for Maxie

Philadelphia needs creativity, youth and an instant rise with Maxie, and honestly, Kuminga has it all. The 22-year-old, who flashed electricity in a leaps and bounds last year, had an explosive athleticism, and when he was locked, he looked like a budding top rotation wing. The Sixers now need to help the team get up, and Kuminga's addition matches that perfectly. Kuminga brings energy, a mentality of highlights, that’s the invisible way that ignites fans and scares opponents. Combine Kumingga's jumping attitude with Maxi's unremitting skills and you have a basic core that combines arrogance and skill.

The Philadelphia blueprint needs wings that can create, defend and grow, not just score. Kuminga meets all conditions. He will experiment with Maxi's ball-holding offense and may push the team to a rising young core, especially if the team can get rid of Embiid and George next. The rational and perfect win-win exchange between the Warriors and the Sixers has freed up the ceiling space, gaining stability among the playoff-tested system players and reducing risks without collateralizing future assets. Philadelphia has potential star power, trades an intermediate restricted free agent and builds around Maxi without losing draft capital. This is the purpose of management: from the upper limit perspective, both sides won. The Warriors avoided Kumingga’s $30M annual requirement and gained cheaper control at Grimes. Philadelphia accepted the high-risk deal while getting a short-term, system-friendly defender.
