Echo: After Arnold left, only Gomez and Jones were left as senior England players

6:22pm, 15 June 2025Football

June 15th, June recently, The Echo talked about the lack of English local players in Liverpool's lineup. They said that in addition to Elliot, Kanssa and Morton with limited opportunities, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones are among the few senior England players on the team. The

U21 European Championship has begun, but this is not seen as an opportunity for Liverpool to bring in new talents, but a window to showcase their young England players. Elliott and Kanssa started and Morton came on the bench in a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic on Thursday night.

These three players performed poorly in Liverpool's season. Elliott did not start in the Premier League for the first time until he won the league championship. Kanssa was replaced in the first half of Slot's game and only played three more times, while Morton's playing time was limited to five Cup appearances.

All three players may have attracted interest from other clubs, Elliott has rejected Nottingham Forest's invitation, Leverkusen is interested in Kansar, although Liverpool plans to keep him on the team, Morton has attracted much attention for his previous two successful English Championship loan experiences.

If all three players leave the team, Liverpool will face a problem that needs to be solved. With Arnold's departure, Joe Gomez (whose future remains doubtful) and Jones will become the only senior England players on the team.

Of course, it is not new to start without an English player. Slott chose this roster in the derby against Everton in February, and in the 1986 FA Cup final, Steve McMahon, the only English player, was on the bench, and Liverpool had an all-Scotland roster in the early days.

In contrast, Arsenal has five regular England players this season, Manchester City has six, Chelsea has seven, and Newcastle has twelve. Liverpool has always been seen as an international club, with many players from other countries fully integrated into Liverpool's culture and regarded as honorary members.

However, after Fowler, Carragher, Gerrard and Arnold passed the torches of local players one after another, Jones may not only be the remaining Liverpool local, but also the only English player.

This situation will ultimately have an impact, and Liverpool realizes the consequences of relying too much on non-local players, although new aid Flynnon's experience at Manchester City's youth camp made him considered a local player. How to manage this situation in the next few months will determine the direction of the transfer window this summer and even in the future.
