Son Heung-min: It s hard to cool if you drink ice for ten years. Dreams can win the Europa League championship for Tottenham

2:31pm, 21 May 2025Football

On May 21, before the Europa League finals, Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United, UEFA official website published an exclusive interview with Tottenham captain Son Heung-min. The Asian king said: "In the ten years of Tottenham, I have accomplished everything, except one thing, which is to win my first trophy for this club."

In the 2015-23 season, Son Heung-min fought side by side with Tottenham's top scorer Kane, and was still successfully selected as the club's best player three times. This is a huge quantitative criterion for the Koreans to succeed in this North London club.

Son Heung-min has become the club captain since 2023. Now 32 years old, he is determined to end his season with the Europa League trophy.

About South Korea

I am very grateful to myself as a Korean. I have always had a strong desire to show my best side, show a good image, and show that there are Korean athletes as good as me in this world. At the same time, I also think that my current status is helped by Korean players who played football in Europe before me.

There are many great players in South Korea, and the seniors paved the way for us to head to the European stage. I feel a little embarrassed when I am being compared to them, but for me, being mentioned with them is a huge honor.

Regarding the 2019 Champions League final loss

I think it is not easy to make up for this disappointment. It was a different game and another opportunity, so I think we'll play with a more determined mindset this time because I think we've definitely learned something from that defeat instead of staying disappointed.

It is very painful to see the opponent's team holding the trophy. Again, in this case, another team was congratulated, but it was hard to see that, and I think losing such a special game is a bit psychologically difficult for me because I really hate losing.

About Tottenham's tough league

Indeed, we're not doing well in the league, but if we always thought this season was a bad season, then we wouldn't be able to reach the UEFA Cup final. So, I think we were able to have this last game because we did a lot of hard work and those efforts paid off, and I think the way I've been playing football is always thinking about how I can help the team more when I'm on the court and what I can do for the team, which is helpful.

I always try to go all out in every game and I focus on keeping a good pace. When things don’t go as planned, I reflect on how to get back on track. I rely heavily on meditation and psychological training to overcome these moments, and I think that helps me perform well all the time.

Regarding opponents Manchester United

We always respect our opponents, but I think it is important to do what we need to do. I think Manchester United players will think so too. It will certainly be a great game, but it will be tough. But I think we want to win it more.

In the decade at Tottenham, I did everything except one thing. I worked hard to make up for this and always dreamed of winning a trophy in Tottenham's jersey. So, I hope we can achieve this dream.
