Telstegen's collapse: From the patron saint to the focus of controversy
Telstegen is still the same, but Barcelona is no longer what it used to be. The German goalkeeper's position as the "number one goalkeeper" is eroded by the club's attitude.
Once upon a time, when people mention Barcelona's goal, they think of Marc Andre Terstegen - the calm and solid goalkeeper, symbolizing a new era after Victor Valdez. He came to Camp Nou at a very young age and played an important role in the 2014/15 Champions League journey, gradually becoming a silent leader on the defense line.
But nearly a decade later, his position is now shaking. This was not because of a temporary mistake, but because of a long-term decline in performance, conservative strategies and ultimately the club's trust in him.
Joan Garcia, who signed for 26.3 million euros, has not only increased the depth of the team, but it is the most obvious sign that Ter Stegen is about to end his reign in Barcelona. And this long slope has actually begun to appear.
Since winning the Champions League in 2015, Ter Stegen has naturally become the club's No. 1 goalkeeper. Competitors such as Bravo, Cilesen, Neto and Inaghi Penia have been marginalized one after another. He was “the man chosen” and enjoyed an almost inviolable position for years—even if the state was not always worthy of that trust.
However, in Rome 2018, Anfield 2019, and the 2-8 defeat to Bayern Munich, there were Telstegen. Strangely, the real serious discussion about his role on the team never happened. Even after two knee surgeries and a significant decline in state, Terstegen still firmly sat in the main position. Despite this, he was unable to compete for the starting position in the national team during the injury of Manuel Neuer.
This protection began to crack, especially when Flick and Deco came to Camp Nou. After his third back surgery in his career, Ter Stegen made a comeback at the end of the 2024/25 season and was quickly disappointing. From improper handling against Valencia, resulting in conceding goals, to directly leading to Eric Garcia being sent off with a red card, Ter Stegen not only regressed in his professional skills, but also failed to show a sense of responsibility that matches his captain's identity.
"There is no understanding between us. I regret Eric." He said-this was a surprisingly cold answer.
In addition, Ter Stegen refused to fly to Milan with the team to participate in the Champions League semi-finals, although other injured players still went together. He also puts pressure on coach Flick to start in important games. Although these details are tiny, once leaked, especially in the context of the club no longer fully protecting him, Ter Stegen's image immediately became distorted in the public's eyes.
Telstegen's tough attitude is not new. In 2016, he threatened to leave unless the club sold Bravo. "I want to be absolutely number one," the German goalkeeper admitted frankly in a podcast. This determination helped him get a position, but also made him never really close to core players like Messi, Pique, Busquets or Neymar.
Even the current captain's armband is not based on the trust of the team, but just because he is the player who has been on the team for the longest time. Therefore, during turbulent times, Ter Stegen seems to lack the ability to serve as a spiritual pillar or speak on behalf of the team.
Perhaps the most painful thing is that Ter Stegen also began to realize that in his nearly ten years of Barcelona career, he did not have any legendary night worth remembering. Not like Supisareta in Turin, Valdes in Saint-Denis or St. Cromburg in Ajax back then. He has a La Liga victory and the 2022/23 season Zamora Award, but he completely lacks the Champions League mark that defines a great goalkeeper.
Barcelona has changed. They no longer avoid the facts. From the full support of the past to the present, Telstegen has faced the storm of public opinion alone, and even leaked the details behind the scenes that were once kept secret. For Ter Stegen, he faces two options: leave to look for a starting opportunity in the 2026 World Cup, or stay here to compete with Joan Garcia. But if you look at the attitudes of the inside and the fans, the former seems more likely.
