Houston Rockets star inside Alperen Shinkin broke out for Turkey at the European Basketball Championship this summer. Turkey eventually entered the gold medal battle, and they beat Giannis Antetokounmpo in the semi-finals to qualify for the final. The Milwaukee Bucks star struggled against Ottoman's defense.
Although Turkey lost to Germany in the final, Shinkin fulfilled his promise to Ottoman - the Rockets star presented him with a Rolex watch to thank him for his outstanding defense in limiting Giannis and helping Turkey advance to the final.
Although Shin Kyung and Turkey failed to win the final victory this summer, this experience laid a good foundation for his NBA journey in 2025-26. In the just-concluded season, Shin Kyung was selected into the All-Star lineup for the first time in his career. The Rockets got Kevin Durant through a heavy offseason trade and are gradually growing into a strong Western Conference team.
With Shin Kyung's continued progress, Dorian Finney-Smith's key free agent signing, and Fred VanVleet and Jabarry Smith Jr.'s contract renewal, the Rockets are ready to make a leap in the Western Conference, where strong players are everywhere.
In the just-concluded season, Shin Kyung played 76 games, averaging 31 minutes, scoring 19.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.1 steals, shooting percentage of 49.6%, three-point shooting percentage of 23.3%, and free throw shooting percentage of 69.2%. Its rebounds hit a career-high.
In the first round playoff series between the Rockets and the Golden State Warriors, Shin Kyung averaged 20.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game, shooting 45% from the field, 37.5% from three-pointers and 62.5% from free throws. This was his career debut in the playoffs.
As the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Shin Kyung has become one of the top inside players in the league and will be selected into the All-Star lineup many times in the future.
