Hard! Crystal Palace coach Glasner: UEFA s relegation decision makes no sense, we will definitely win back the Europa League seat

8:32am, 10 August 2025Football

Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner said he was "optimistic" to believe that the club would win legal action and overturn the decision to relegate from the UEFA Cup to the UEFA Champions League. UEFA imposed the penalty after ruling that Crystal Palace violated its multi-club ownership provisions. The

governing body pointed out that American investor John Textor holds a stake in the South London club, and he is also the major shareholder of Ligue 1 club Lyon - another team to compete in the UEFA Cup this season.

Crystal Palace appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in July, in which it listed UEFA, Lyon and Nottingham Forest.

If the decision is maintained, Nottingham Forest, the seventh-ranked Premier League Premier League last season, will replace Crystal Palace's UEFA Europa League place. The

CAS hearing began on Friday and a ruling is expected to be made before Monday.

Before the Community Shield match against Liverpool on Sunday, Glasner told reporters: "I have been optimistic."

"I can't see any reason why we should be relegated and we should stay in Europa League."

"I understand how the club operates, and only the chairman and the team here who make decisions."

Why was Crystal Palace relegated?

UEFA rules prohibit clubs with significant control of the same person or entity from appearing in the same event.

Crystal Palace failed to meet the UEFA deadline of 1 March 2025 to provide a restructuring plan to address these concerns.

club insisted that Texter did not exercise its decisive influence, but UEFA rejected the defense.

Last week, Chairman Steve Parish said in the "The Rest is Football" podcast that he had "high hopes" for a successful appeal.

In the submission, Crystal Palace demanded the revocation of UEFA's financial control agency's ruling and demanded that Crystal Palace be requalified at the expense of Nottingham Forest or Lyon's side.

Currently, Crystal Palace is preparing for the European Union play-offs at the end of this month, with opponents being Fredrikstad from Norway or Midtjylland from Denmark. The UEFA Cup group stage will start on September 24.
