July 26th The Manchester Evening News reported that Manchester United is considering appointing Stephen Torpe to replace Nick Cox. The former Manchester City employee, currently serving as Brentford youth training director, has been reported to have been on the Carrington base.
Manchester United is conducting a comprehensive recruitment search, striving to find the industry's top successors and said they will not make hasty decisions. Cox, who is currently in the 12-month resignation notice period, will be transferred to Everton's technical director this summer after serving Manchester United's youth training academy for nine years. During his term, he led the revival of Manchester United's youth training, not only leading many signings of top young players, but also leading the team to win the Youth FA Cup in the 2021-22 season.
Torpe, who took office as Brentford in January 2024, has his core mission to help Brentford build a youth training system from scratch and impact the qualifications of the First-level College of the FA. But the candidate, who has only been in London for one and a half years, may move north to Manchester. He previously worked at Manchester City for nine and a half years, working closely with current Manchester United football director Jason Wilcox, and gradually promoted from the grassroots level to becoming the coaching director of the U15-U23 age group in 2020, leading the team to win multiple championships.
Torpe, 43, is believed to help Manchester City establish a Barcelona-style coaching system, allowing the youth team to form a unified tactical style with the first team. He is seen in the growth trajectory of Guardiola's rookies such as Foden, Palmer, James McCarty and Rico Lewis. As a member of the youth training recruitment team, he has also participated in the introduction of potential new stars.
Torpe, who has an average player career, returned to Liverpool after becoming a coach. This Reds Youth Training produced a period of Spanish football philosophy brought by Benitez to work for the parent team's youth system. He said in a recent interview with The Times: "When you watch the players you have trained since childhood debut for a team, it feels like witnessing your own children's growth. There is nothing more proud of fans than seeing their own people appear. This is exactly our mission at Brentford, allowing fans to feel the same throbbing when they see local players playing in the Premier League at the Gtech Community Stadium."
