Morgan Rodgers goal was invalid - wrong?

1:54pm, 18 June 2025Football

Former Premier League referee Demot Gallagher expressed his opinion on Morgan Rodgers' goal against Manchester United being invalid.

Event: Villa believed they took the lead in the second half when Morgan Rodgers poked the ball out of Altay Bayindier and scored the ball into an empty goal, but Thomas Bramore canceled the goal after allegedly fouling against the Manchester United goalkeeper. The referee awarded Manchester United a free kick, and Bayindir was considered to have controlled the ball. Dermott said: There are a lot to discuss. The goalkeeper concedes the ball, but once the referee blew the whistle, the game ended, and that's where the damage was done. Rodgers' shots don't count. If the referee only takes one second, then the situation changes and VAR can intervene. Once VAR stepped in, he might chase his decision in front of the screen. It's very untidy.

VAR checks when the whistle sounds, not the goal. This is a key issue. If he waited, time was still his own, he had that time and he could make how many decisions he wanted to make. He could ask his assistant. Then he can ask VAR. He might say it was a foul and we'll accept it.

He just didn't give himself time to think, this was his only mistake. Sue Smith said: Referees must learn to give themselves some time. If he does, then VAR may step in. It is difficult to see whether the goalkeeper has got the ball from the referee's position, so VAR will have a better angle to see that he is not controlling the ball. The goal should have been set.
