Coco Gauff: Women s tennis is better than men

8:41am, 16 November 2025More Sports

"I think women's tennis is more attractive when the opportunity to win is for many people. For example, this year's Grand Slam, there were four different players crowned. That's great, showing a really competitive season, " Gauff said when attending the 2025 WTA Finals, in Saudi Arabia on November 3. "It's true that Alcaraz and Sinner are playing very well, but I think a third person is needed to be more challenging. Having different champions would be better than just the two of them ".

In the women's tennis industry this season, Madison Keys made an impression at the beginning of the year with the Australian Open title, before Gauff became runner-up at Roland Garros. At Wimbledon, the cup belonged to Iga Swiatek, then Aryna Sabalenka won glory at the US Open. In contrast to men's tennis, the four 2025 Grand Slam titles are divided equally between Sinner and Alcaraz.

"I don't want to diminish anything, obviously the rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz is very great and attractive, " Gauff said. "But in the long term, as a fan, it will be more exciting and worth waiting for to watch the quarterfinals or semi-finals without knowing who won, or which player won the championship. However, what is happening also shows how good Sinner and Alcaraz are. ".

In the opening match in the Steffi Graf group, Gauff lost to Jessica Pegula 3-6, 7-6, 2-6. In more than two hours of competition, Gauff made 17 bad errors and 75 unforced errors. Before this match, the 21-year-old player defeated fellow American Pegula in the final of the Wuhan Open.

Gauff's next opponents are Jasmine Paolini and Sabalenka, respectively. At the 2024 WTA Finals, Gauff won the championship after coming back to defeat Zheng Qinwen in the final.

In this year's tournament, the remaining group is named Serena Williams, including Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova, Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys. The event continues to be hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with the final taking place on November 8.

A similar men's tournament, the ATP Finals, kicks off on November 9 in Turin, Italy. Sinner is the defending champion after defeating Taylor Fritz in last year's final. At this time, seven of the eight tournament spots have been claimed, including Sinner, Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton and Alex de Minaur. The eighth spot is a competition between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti.
