May 25th news Thunder star Shea Gilgers Alexander won the MVP Award for the first time in his career by winning the scoring title and leading the Thunder to the league's highest 68 wins this season.
On the second day of his award, NBA President Adam Xiao presented him with an MVP trophy before the Thunder defeated the Timberwolves 118-103. At the award ceremony, a stranger sat next to Alexander's wife Haley, who occupied a sideline seat that he had never seen before. This man was no one else but his former teammate and mentor Chris Paul.
Afterward, Alexander talked about seeing Paul appear at the MVP ceremony and said, "That's great, completely beyond my expectations. I had to take a look and thought, 'Who is sitting next to my wife?' I was a little nervous, but when I saw it was Chris, I felt relieved, 'Great.'"
Obviously, Paul's visit was not arranged in advance. After the interview, Alexander drew on the protective belt on the sidelines, hugged and kissed his wife, and then slapped Paul with a smile. Obviously, Paul made his old teammates think he wouldn't be there.
"He is not only my elder brother, mentor, but also a friend," Alexander said. "He has always been my support. He is the first person in my life to meet the goals I want to achieve. I rely heavily on his advice, not just basketball, but also business, taking care of the body, dealing with family members not around. NBA players, especially at his level, face a lot of unknown things. His coaching is great, not just off-court issues, but also support as a friend."
Paul has equally deep feelings for Alexander.
"He is my family, and I will never miss this moment anyway," Paul said of participating in Alexander's MVP awards competition, "especially such moments."
Of the many suggestions Paul gave Alexander, Alexander said that the most valuable thing was Paul teaching him to improve his diet. Alexander said he was a fan of restaurant chains when he was young and loved to go to The Cheesecake Factory and fast food restaurants, and Canadians' favorite pastime is eating Domino's pizza late at night.
"I ate badly when I was young," Alexander said in an interview, "he taught me how to take care of my body and eat healthy."
