August 9th According to FOX8 reporter Dolan Reynolds, lawyers said that the convictions of four men accused of killing Chris Paul's grandfather in 2002 were overturned.

It is understood that in 2002, the day after Paul promised to play for Wake Forest, 61-year-old Nathaniel Jones was killed and five teenagers were charged with murder. Police said Jones was beaten to death in a garage outside her home and his wallet disappeared.

It is reported that four of the five have been appealing in recent years to try to prove themselves innocent, but have been dismissed.

It is understood that Nathaniel Cowson was only 15 years old at the time of the incident. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2004 and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. In 2016, Cowson was sentenced to life imprisonment and had the possibility of parole; Cowson's brother Rayshaun Denard Banner was also sentenced to life imprisonment without parole; Jermyr Toliver and Christopher Bryant were sentenced to 12 years in prison for second-degree murder and robbery; Dorrell Breboy was stabbed to death after being released from prison in 2019.

In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a judge could not sentence teenagers to mandatory life imprisonment. In 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled retroactively to apply the previous judgment.

As Paul grew up, he spent every summer at his grandfather Nathaniel Jones's gas station, who credited many of his life experiences to his grandfather and called him his best friend. Paul later scored 61 points in a game to commemorate his grandfather.
