NBA Offseason: Top 10 Unrestricted Free Players Still Available, including Russell Westbrook

8:19pm, 28 July 2025Basketball

The offseason in the

NBA has slowed down. Very slowed down.

This means that the action is not over yet and there are some things worth paying attention to. There are also four restricted free agents – Jonathan Cumingga (still seeking a signing deal of about $30 million per season), Josh Gidey, Cam Thomas and Quentin Grimes. Additionally, some veterans can receive contract renewals, including Luca Doncic (who is expected to re-sign with the Lakers without much drama), Kevin Durant, Trae Young and DeAndre Fox.

Moreover, there are some vacant lineup positions that need to be filled. Here are the top ten free agents that can still be signed, although at this time each of them is expected to sign the lowest veteran contract or some teams still have minor exceptions.

Note: There is no Malik Beasley on this list, he is an unrestricted free agent, but no team will approach him due to the ongoing gambling investigation hanging over his head.

1)Al Horford

There is not much drama here, because Al Horford is expected to sign with the Warriors. The only reason he is still available is that Kuminga’s restricted free agent issue has not been resolved, which has left the Warriors temporarily on other moves until the issue is resolved.

Horford is the kind of high IQ two-way player who should thrive in the Warriors and Steve Cole's system. He can score in the inside, shoot 3-pointers, and remains a quality defender at the age of 37. Due to his age, his playing time must be monitored during the season, but that is a small price to the quality time he offers when he plays (and he can trust playing in the playoffs).

2) Westbrook

So far, no team has signed up for the Russell Westbrook roller coaster next season. Last season, he averaged 13.3 points and 6.1 assists per game with the Nuggets and worked well with Nikola Jokic. However, these solid numbers masked the ups and downs of the season. When he is in good shape, his energy is infectious and he can still make dynamic, sporty Westbrooks that can change the course of the game. Unfortunately, these great performances can be followed by a puzzling bad decision that can lead to the team losing the game.

Denver could have re-signed Westbrook after he exercised a $3.5 million player option, but he chose to change direction. This may give some revelation to other competing teams. Westbrook is linked to the Sacramento Kings.

3)Chris Boucher

Boches is the kind of player who is highly sought after in the league (which makes him a little surprised). He is a reliable, rotational power forward, averaging 10 points and 4.5 rebounds in Toronto last season and scored almost four 3-pointers per game, shooting 36.3%. He is a player who can fit into many rosters and help, and fans who don’t watch him play in Toronto will be surprised when he signs with a team.

4)Amir Kofi

Last season, as a key rotation player for 50-win Clippers, the 28-year-old winger averaged 9.7 points per game and shot 40.9% from the 3-point line, and he is particularly good at 3-pointers taking the ball. Amir Kofi failed to enter Tyron Lu's rotation when the playoffs arrived, but the team was looking for depth on the wing, Amir Kofi could help.

5) Gary Payton II

He is still available to choose from a little surprise, as teams are looking for players who can defend and shoot 3 points (although he is not a great shooter, his career three-point shooting percentage is 34%). Parton averaged 6.5 points per game for the Warriors last season. The possibility of returning to the Bay Area is not non-existent, but the Lakers, Heat, Bucks and Suns are also linked to Parton.

6)Malcolm Brogdon

He was the sixth man of the best two years ago, but due to injuries, he has played only 63 games in the past two seasons (in Portland and Washington), which has made his value in the league drop. If healthy, he is worth the risk for a team as he can be part of the defender rotation. While healthy, he averaged 12.7 points and 4.1 assists per game last season.

7) Seth Curry

Every team needs more shooting. Seth Curry shot 45.6% from three-pointers in Charlotte last season. He can enhance the defender rotation if he is inserted into a suitable backup role, and he is thought to be likely to sign with the Warriors where his brother is (however, like Al Horford, with the Golden State Warriors, everything seems to be stalling, waiting for the end of the Kumingga incident).

8)Trey Lyles' situation is similar to Boucher above: many teams need a swingman in the fourth position/small in the fifth position, and Trey Lyles can fill this role on the bench. He averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in mid-game in Sacramento last season (and he also played some of this and last season under Mike Brown if you're looking for a team he might have had connections). Some teams will sign him before the season begins.

9) Ben Simmons

No matter which team signs Simmons, fans will roll their eyes. However, if you watched his game while he was healthy last season, you'll see a role player who can serve as a substitute in the NBA regular season.

Average 2.9 points and 3.8 assists per game and played 16 minutes as the second-team ball forward and responsible for offensive organization, he remains a good defender (he played a more important role in rebuilding Brooklyn). He won't shoot threes (or shoot outside the paint), and he won't help in the playoffs. However, in limited roles, he can help the right team achieve good results in the first 82 games.

10) Monte Morris

An experienced rotation guard with a career three-point shooting percentage of 38.9% (36% last season). He has performed a bit last season, but at Phoenix, those performances didn’t fit well together, and Morris is part of it. He wasn't scoring at 30 (age at camp) than he was five years ago, but he could still help a team that needed depth to defend.
