Take the initiative to let Curry get the FMVP?

5:26am, 15 August 2025Basketball

Former Golden State Warriors player Quinn Cook recently broke a secret of the 2018 Finals in an interview with the show: "Kevin Durant really hopes Stephen Curry can win that Finals MVP, and he has been talking about this all season. His goal is to shut up all doubters and prove Curry's value. But he didn't expect that he would win again 'accidentally'."

Durant's "plan" and "unexpected" FMVP

Time returned to the 2018 Finals, and the powerful Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers led by LeBron James 4-0, and successfully defended the title without any suspense. However, the ownership of FMVP became a major highlight at that time.

Durant continued his dominant performance the previous year, averaging 28.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game. This is a slight decrease in scoring compared to his stats when he won the Warriors for the first time in 2017 and won the FMVP (35.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists per game), but the rebounds and assists are even better. It was precisely with his stable and critical performance in the series that Durant once again won the Bill Russell Cup.

Cook's revelations added an intriguing footnote to this history - Durant himself wanted to see Curry crowned at that time. This shows Durant's sincere expectation for his teammates' achievements, and also reflects the Warriors' recognition of Curry's core position in that year.

From FMVP to Phoenix, and then to Houston, the eyes turned to the present. Last season, Durant played in the Phoenix Suns' jersey and played in 62 regular season games, and still maintained the efficiency of a top scorer, averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game, shooting percentage as high as 52.7%, and his three-point shooting percentage reached an astonishing 43.0%.

However, the NBA's stage is always full of variables. Just in the just-passed offseason, the Suns launched a heavy trade to send Durant to the Houston Rockets. It is reported that the Rockets have given potential star Jaylen Green, defensive player Dillon Brooks, the 10th pick in the first round of 2025 and as many as 5 future second round picks. The deal marks a new chapter in Durant's career and demonstrates the Rockets' determination to rebuild quickly around him.

Past and Journey

Cook's words unveiled an unknown thought behind the glory of 2018. It reminds us that in the Golden State Dynasty, where superstars gather, in addition to dazzling champions and trophys, there are also complex and sincere emotional connections between stars. Durant's unfulfilled "letting the virtuous" intention has now become a warm historical footnote in the glorious years of the Warriors' dynasty.

Meanwhile, Durant's story continues to be written. From Oscar to Golden State, from Brooklyn to Phoenix, and now Houston, the all-time scorer is always chasing the next goal of his basketball career. When the past of FMVP has become a cloud of smoke, 35-year-old Durant's new journey in Space City has just begun.
